Flávio Bolsonaro has done the hard part for Brazil's right. He locked down the Liberal Party nomination and absorbed his father's base after Jair Bolsonaro's legal disqualification. He has also quieted the family feuding and leaked audio that once threatened his campaign. Minor right-leaning candidates sit in single digits, so there is little vote-splitting working against him. That consolidation shows up in the numbers. Quaest has the runoff at 43 to 40. Nexus finds a similar gap. It is closer than expected, but closer is not ahead. Lula leads first-round surveys in the high 30s to low 40s and holds the edge in nearly every major head-to-head simulation six weeks before voting closes on October 4. Incumbency still carries weight in Brazil. Debt relief and fuel subsidies are already rolling out, the classic playbook for blunting late economic discontent among working-class voters. Flávio still needs to convert a unified conservative base into a broader majority in states like São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Nothing in the polling yet shows that conversion happening. The counterargument is real: three points is thin, the formal campaign has only just opened, and Brazil's late-campaign swings are notoriously volatile. But trailing in nearly every runoff scenario this close to voting is a structural problem, not noise. The thing to watch: whether post-debate polls, starting with the debates opening August 23, show Flávio actually overtaking Lula in repeated runoff surveys.
