The Fed has held its target range at 3.50 to 3.75 percent since July. Nothing in the data since has forced its hand either way. Inflation is still running at 3.4 percent annually, with core near 2.5 percent, well above target. Unemployment at 4.1 percent is steady enough that policymakers feel no pressure to ease. That combination points toward another hold on 28 October rather than a move in either direction. What keeps this from being a formality is the July vote itself. Three committee members dissented in favor of a hike, not a cut, with Middle East driven energy pressure adding weight to that hawkish case. If the September inflation prints run hot, that bloc could grow and tip the committee toward a quarter point increase instead of another pause. A cut, by contrast, looks essentially off the table given where prices and jobs currently sit. Still, institutional inertia counts for a lot. Central banks rarely reverse course without a clear shock, and a divided committee with a hawkish minority is not the same as a majority ready to tighten. Stable jobs data buys the Fed time to wait for cleaner signals rather than react to a single volatile reading. A hold remains the most likely outcome, though not an overwhelming one. The single thing to watch is the August CPI release due September 11, and how the September FOMC meeting shakes out. A sharp upside surprise there is the one development that could flip October from a hold to a hike.
